Muzo, Coscuez, Chivor: what sets the Colombian emerald apart
Colombian emeralds crystallize in black shales crossed by hot brines, a geology found nowhere else. It gives the pure, slightly warm green that serves as the reference for the whole trade, and the three-phase inclusions laboratories recognize. We buy mostly on the Muzo marketplace, but a laboratory attests the country of origin, not the mine. Our product pages therefore say Colombia, and a deposit name appears only when we can document it. Treatment and certificate
Almost every emerald on the market receives a filling, oil or resin, that fills fine fissures. The laboratory measures two things, the nature of the product and its quantity, from none to significant, and we write both in every case, even when French regulations do not require it. The certificate number can be checked with the laboratory, and the Verify my stone page finds a stone's photo file from its number.
The price of a Colombian emerald
Price does not follow weight alone. Under 2 carats, color and clarity make most of the value, and above that an intense color becomes rare.
