Afghanistan's Emeralds: The Forgotten Green of the Panjshir

A color that rivals that of Colombian emeralds, inclusions found nowhere else in the world, and a tight market. Everything you need to know about Afghan emeralds.

Afghan emeralds come mainly from the Panjshir Valley, about 100 kilometers northeast of Kabul, in the Hindu Kush mountain range. Their color—ranging from a pastel green to a vivid, highly saturated green—is often compared to that of Colombian emeralds.

Their gemmological characteristics stem from their multiphase fluid inclusions, which are very rich in salt crystals, and from two minerals (eosphorite and xenotime) that have so far been described only in Afghan emeralds. These markers allow for reliable determination of origin in the laboratory.

An emerald can have the color of a Muzo emerald without coming from Colombia. The Panjshir produces them, from mountains that almost no one has ever seen.

In the general public’s perception, emeralds are often associated with just three countries: Colombia, Zambia, and Brazil. Afghanistan never makes the list. Yet its finest stones stand up to comparison with the most beautiful Colombian emeralds, and their gemmological signature is one of the most distinctive in the world. The fact that they are rarely seen has less to do with quality than with access and distribution channels.

Where Are the Mines in Afghanistan?

The main deposit is the Panjshir Valley, the “Valley of the Five Lions,” located in the Hindu Kush mountain range along the Panjshir River. The mines are spread out about 100 kilometers northeast of Kabul, around the village of Khenj, on slopes ranging in elevation from 2,100 to 4,270 meters.

It is a high-mountain mining operation that is difficult to access and largely artisanal. The valley’s historic mining areas bear names that are little known outside Afghanistan: Darkhenj, Mikeni, Yaknow, Buzmal, and Darun. They are concentrated mainly on the east side of the river.

A second deposit is located in Laghman Province, about 80 kilometers southeast of Panjshir, near the village of Korgun. Discovered later, it produces gem-quality stones of comparable quality, but mining there remains limited due to the difficulty of access. As a result, Laghman emeralds are rarely found on the international market.

A stone known since ancient times

Commercial mining in the Panjshir Valley is a recent development: it truly began in the early 1980s, following surveys conducted by Russian geologists in the second half of the 1970s.

But the history of the emerald likely goes back much further. Ancient authors such as Theophrastus (4th century BCE) and Pliny the Elder (1st century CE) mention an emerald known as the “Bactrian emerald,” named after a historical region that encompassed parts of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. All three of these countries produce emeralds today.

This is therefore a serious possibility: the discovery in the 1970s may simply be a rediscovery of a deposit that had been mined intermittently since ancient times and then forgotten. This would not be the first time the region has been overlooked: Afghanistan has been supplying lapis lazuli from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan, which are among the oldest in the world still in operation.

The Emerald and the War

Few gemstones have such a direct connection to their country’s military history. Duringthe Soviet occupation (1979–1989), Panjshir emeralds were used to finance the mujahideen. The valley, which was virtually impregnable, was one of the main centers of resistance.

Starting in 1996, under the first Taliban regime, it became the stronghold of Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud—nicknamed the “Lion of Panjshir”—who also financed part of his resistance with revenue from emeralds. For twenty years, the Afghan emerald was thus as much an economic resource as it was a strategic asset.

This story goes a long way toward explaining why these stones have remained largely unknown. A supply chain operating under a war economy does not export through official channels: it moves through informal networks, often via Pakistan, where the stones are cut and then resold without any mention of their origin.

The Color of Afghan Emeralds

That is the standout feature of these stones. Afghan emeralds range in color from pastel green to vivid green, and the finest stones from the Panjshir Valley boast a saturation that places them in the top tier. Gemologists frequently compare them to Colombian emeralds, which is rare for stones from any source other than Colombia.

This color can be explained by chemistry: the green comes from chromium and vanadium, which produce distinct absorption bands around 400 to 450 nanometers and 600 to 650 nanometers. The amount of iron, on the other hand, varies greatly from one area to another.

This detail has a direct visual effect. High iron content cools and darkens the green, shifting it toward a bluish hue, as seen in many African gemstones. However, Panjshir emeralds generally exhibit significantly lower-than-average iron-related absorption. This is precisely what gives them their vivid and luminous color, which is closer to the Colombian spectrum than to the Zambian spectrum.

Inclusions: A Mark of Authenticity

This is where the Afghan emerald becomes particularly fascinating for a gemologist. Its inclusions are among the most distinctive in the world, to the point that they allow for a reliable determination of its origin.

About the images in this section

Fluid inclusions packed with salt

Panjshir emeralds are distinguished by the complexity of their multiphase fluid inclusions—microscopic cavities that contain liquid, gas, and solid crystals. Three characteristics are consistently present.

About three-quarters of these inclusions do not take the form of classic geometric shapes (square, rectangle, hexagon, triangle). Their edges are jagged and bristling with long spikes.

Salt crystals

Nearly 87% contain a crystal of halite (rock salt) or sylvite. About half contain two, and more than one in five contain three.

Up to 27 solids

Some elongated tubular inclusions, oriented parallel to the optical axis, contain up to 27 solid crystals. This is a very strong indicator of a Panjshir origin.

Carbon dioxide

Some three-phase inclusions contain both liquid and gaseous CO₂, which combine into a single phase above 29 °C. This behavior can be observed using a heating microscope.

This salt density is the distinguishing feature. Emeralds from Colombia and Nigeria also exhibit irregular, jagged fluid inclusions, but the presence of two halite crystals is rare in these stones: about 9% for Colombia and 5% for Nigeria, compared to about half of all cases in Afghanistan. A large, jagged inclusion with several gas bubbles and multiple salt crystals might immediately suggest a Colombian origin, whereas in reality it points to Afghanistan.

Solid inclusions and two unique minerals

As for solid inclusions, the list is long and largely unremarkable: pyrite with a brass-colored metallic sheen, quartz, calcite, dolomite, apatite, graphite, limonite, goethite, rutile, tourmaline, tremolite, and feldspars. The mica present is phlogopite, in thin, transparent, greenish platelets that are easily recognizable under crossed polarizers.

Two minerals stand out from the rest. To date,eosphorite and xenotime have been described only in Afghan emeralds. Their presence is therefore a particularly strong indicator of origin, which is valuable when documented traceability is lacking.

Growth and Structure

Growth tubes and channels are common, oriented parallel to the crystal axis, with highly variable lengths and thicknesses. Afghan stones also develop parallel angular growth lines that form a zigzag pattern. This feature is not unique to Afghanistan: it is also found in Colombia, Pakistan, Brazil (Bahia), and Nigeria. It should therefore be interpreted in conjunction with other characteristics, never on its own.

Afghan or Colombian: How to Tell Them Apart

The confusion is real, and it has a direct commercial impact: a beautiful Afghan stone can be sold as Colombian, at a higher price. Here are the key differences.

No single criterion is sufficient on its own. A thorough determination of origin combines microscopic observation of inclusions, spectrometry, and trace element analysis. For a valuable gemstone, only a laboratory report can truly confirm its origin.

The Afghan Market in 2026

Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the industry has been brought under control. The authorities now hold regular auctions in Panjshir Province, where lots of freshly mined gemstones are sold to Afghan and foreign dealers, with a levy of about 10% on sales. Several hundred mining licenses have been issued, and the reported volumes amount to tens of thousands of carats per year.

These figures come from official announcements and, by their very nature, cannot be independently verified. At the same time, observers note the continued existence of informal mining, limited price transparency, and questions about the portion of revenue that is actually paid to miners and the local economy.

What This Means When You Buy

For a European buyer, the issue goes beyond gemology. Purchasing an Afghan emerald today requires knowing the supply chain through which it arrived—information that is rarely documented: many stones are cut in Pakistan or the United Arab Emirates and change hands several times before reaching Europe. The origin claimed by the seller is therefore of little value.

That is why we do not offer Afghan emeralds at Johya. Not because we have any reservations about the stone itself—which is superb—but because our commitment is based on a fully documented supply chain from start to finish, from the dealer to the export invoice. We are unable to meet this standard for stones of this origin. We believe it is more honest to state this than to sell stones from a source we cannot verify.

Insist on an international laboratory report that explicitly states the origin and level of treatment. Ask for the previous seller’s invoice and the country of cutting. A beautiful stone without documentation is not a bargain—it’s a risk, both when reselling and when declaring it.

Where do Afghan emeralds come from?

Mainly in the Panjshir Valley, about 100 kilometers northeast of Kabul, in the Hindu Kush mountain range, around the village of Khenj and at elevations ranging from 2,100 to 4,270 meters. A second, less-developed deposit is located in Laghman Province, near the village of Korgun.

Are Afghan emeralds as valuable as Colombian ones?

In terms of color, the finest Panjshir stones rival those from Colombia, with a vivid, luminous green color due to their generally low iron content. In terms of price, they remain less expensive, mainly because the origin is not well known and it is difficult to document their provenance.

How can you tell if an emerald is from the Panjshir?

By its fluid, multiphase inclusions with jagged edges, which are exceptionally rich in salt crystals: nearly 87% contain at least one, and about half contain two. The presence of eosphorite or xenotime is an even stronger indicator, as these two minerals have been described only in Afghan emeralds.

Why do we see so few Afghan emeralds in France?

Because the industry has long remained informal, shaped by decades of conflict, and because the stones often pass through Pakistan or the United Arab Emirates, where they are cut and resold without any indication of their origin. As a result, many Afghan emeralds circulate in Europe without being identified as such.

Does the trade in Afghan emeralds pose an ethical problem?

It’s a valid question. Since 2021, sales have been organized and taxed by the authorities in power, with limited transparency regarding prices and the share going to miners. Without supply-chain documentation, a buyer has no way of knowing what they’re funding. This is an issue that needs to be addressed even before the quality of the gemstone is considered.

Are Afghan emeralds oiled?

Like virtually all emeralds on the global market—yes, the vast majority of them. The level of treatment must be indicated on the lab report, ranging from the lightest to the heaviest. A stone advertised as untreated but lacking a certificate should be viewed with the utmost caution.
