Description of the stone
Colombian trapiche emerald of 1.90 ct, polished as a domed cushion. Unlike matt slices, this one has kept the translucency of a gem: an intense, living green, crossed by the six fine dark spokes that signal the trapiche.
The contrast between the depth of the green and the natural geometry of the pattern makes it a singular stone, at once graphic and precious.

What is treatment/oiling and is it normal?
Almost all natural emeralds show some oiling, an old and recognized practice that improves the legibility of the stone. The exact degree (no oil, minor, moderate) appears on the certificate and directly influences the price.
Is the color true to life?
Our photographs and our video show the exact stone, with no retouching at all. But the color of an emerald is never fixed: it changes with exposure to light. The same green will look deeper in daylight, warmer under a lamp, darker in shade. That is true of every emerald, not only ours.
This is why video remains the most faithful rendering: the stone moves, and you see it from several angles and under several angles of light, as if you were holding it. If you want to see it in other conditions, ask us for an extra video: we will film it and send it to you.

Color and saturation
In an emerald, color sets the price before anything else. Three things are looked at: hue, which runs from slightly bluish green to slightly yellowish green; saturation, that is the intensity of the green; and tone, from lightest to darkest. The intense, slightly bluish green of the Colombian deposits is the most sought after.
A stone that is too dark loses its brilliance; one that is too light loses its presence. The balance point is judged by eye, never from a specification sheet alone: that is why every stone is filmed.
The jardin of inclusions
The inclusions of an emerald are called the jardin. They are normal and expected: an emerald with no visible inclusion at all is so rare that it should first raise the suspicion of a synthetic. The jardin is also what allows a laboratory to link a stone to its deposit.
What matters is not their absence but their position: inclusions at the periphery are less troublesome than a fracture in the middle of the table, which catches the eye and weakens the stone.
The origin of the deposit
Colombia has historically produced the most sought-after emeralds, around three zones: Muzo, Coscuez and Chivor. Muzo is associated with a deep, slightly yellowish green, Chivor with a bluer green. Origin is a laboratory determination, based on inclusions and chemical composition, not a commercial claim.
When we cannot prove the exact mine, we write Colombia and nothing more.
Oiling and its grading
Nearly all the emeralds on the market are oiled: a colorless oil fills the fissures open at the surface and makes the stone easier to read. The practice is old, accepted and reversible. What must be declared is the degree: none, insignificant, minor, moderate, significant.
A hardening artificial resin, on the other hand, is not equivalent: it cannot be removed the way an oil can. The certificate supplied with each stone states the measured degree and the nature of the filling material, without any interpretation on our part.
The cut
The emerald cut, rectangular with clipped corners, was designed for this stone: it limits stress on a fragile material and brings out depth of color rather than sparkle. Pear, cushion and oval serve the same ends with a different silhouette.
A good cut is judged by the even distribution of color and the absence of dead zones, not by a brilliance index borrowed from the diamond: those optical measurements make no sense on an emerald.
