Authenticity and Treatment Disclosure Policy

Our Commitment

JOHYA is committed to offering you exclusively natural stones, whose authenticity, origin, and any treatments are disclosed transparently, in accordance with:

  • Decree No. 2002-65 of January 14, 2002, relating to the trade of gemstones and pearls
  • Rules issued by CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation)
  • International standards of reference laboratories (GIA, Gübelin, SSEF, AGL, CDTEC)

Stone Origin

JOHYA sources directly from Colombia, mainly in the Muzo region (Boyacá department), renowned for its exceptional emeralds. The traceability of each stone is documented from its acquisition to its sale.

Emerald Treatments

Almost all emeralds sold worldwide undergo treatment to improve the stone's clarity by reducing the visibility of natural inclusions. The most common treatment is oil (cedarwood oil) or resin impregnation.

JOHYA systematically discloses the type and intensity of the treatment on each product sheet, according to international nomenclature:

  • No treatment (no oil)
  • Insignificant
  • Minor (F1)
  • Moderate (F2)
  • Significant (F3)

Gemological Certificates

Stones of particular value or importance are accompanied by a certificate issued by an independent gemological laboratory. The certificate specifies, among other things, the carat weight, dimensions, color, clarity, geographical origin when certified, and the detected treatment level.

Authenticity Guarantee

JOHYA guarantees that each stone sold matches the description on its product sheet. In case of dispute, the Customer may have a contradictory analysis performed by a recognized independent laboratory. If the analysis confirms a substantial non-conformity of the stone with the description, JOHYA will provide a full refund, including appraisal and return shipping costs, to the extent strictly necessary to establish the non-conformity.

Care and Preservation

As emeralds are relatively fragile stones and sensitive to shocks, solvents, and sudden temperature changes, it is recommended to:

  • Remove them before any manual work, sports, or contact with chemicals (perfumes, creams, household products)
  • Clean them only with a soft, slightly damp cloth
  • Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can alter treatments
  • Store them separately from other jewelry to prevent scratches

A new oil treatment can be performed periodically by a professional to preserve the stone's brilliance.
