Authenticity and Treatment Disclosure Policy

Our commitment

JOHYA undertakes to offer you natural stones exclusively, whose authenticity, origin and any treatments are disclosed transparently, in accordance with:

  • Decree No. 2002-65 of 14 January 2002 on trade in gemstones and pearls
  • The rules laid down by CIBJO (Confédération Internationale de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie, des Diamants, Perles et Pierres)
  • The international standards of the reference laboratories (GIA, Gübelin, SSEF, AGL, CDTEC)

Origin of the stones

JOHYA sources directly in Colombia, mainly in the Muzo region (department of Boyacá), renowned for its exceptional emeralds. The traceability of each stone is documented from its acquisition through to its offer for sale.

Treatment of emeralds

Almost all emeralds sold worldwide undergo a treatment intended to improve the legibility of the stone by reducing the visibility of natural inclusions. The most common treatment is impregnation with oil (cedar oil) or resin.

JOHYA systematically discloses the type and the intensity of the treatment on every product page, according to the international nomenclature:

  • None (no oil)
  • Insignificant
  • Minor oil (F1)
  • Moderate oil (F2)
  • Significant (F3)

Gemological certificates

Stones of particular value or importance are accompanied by a certificate issued by an independent gemological laboratory. The certificate states in particular the weight in carats, the dimensions, the color, the clarity, the geographical origin where it is attested, and the level of treatment detected.

Authenticity guarantee

JOHYA guarantees that every stone sold corresponds to the description appearing on its product page. In the event of a dispute, the Client may have a counter-analysis carried out by a recognized independent laboratory. If the analysis confirms a substantial non-conformity of the stone with the description, JOHYA will refund in full, including expert assessment and return costs, within the limits of what is strictly necessary to establish the non-conformity.

Care and storage

As emeralds are relatively fragile stones, sensitive to impact, to solvents and to sudden variations in temperature, it is recommended:

  • To remove them before any manual work, sport, or contact with chemical products (perfumes, creams, household products)
  • To clean them only with a soft, slightly damp cloth
  • To avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can alter the treatments
  • To store them separately from other jewelry to avoid scratches

A fresh oil treatment may be carried out periodically by a professional to preserve the brilliance of the stone.
